I went to China for the solar eclipse expedition to Mount Emei, July 2009, to make a 4K time-lapse movie. I ended up in a foggy and drizzling summit. See: Embezzeled Eclipse.
China revealed itself as a surprising country. E.g. a decade ago, when I was in Beijing, the smog was really painful. Each breath felt like swallowing a handful needles. Nowadays you can breath and I biked thorough the city centre. No problem at all. A surprising change indeed, mainly triggered by promoting electrical scooters and mopeds. You just don't see any petrol driven motorized bikes anymore. No force or legislations used to achieve this stunning result which was stimulated for gaining clean air before the olympics.
A sample of the also existing positive benefits of central power and strangely enough, I encountered no reference in western media of this remarkable achievement so far. Fine dust exhaustion of petrol scooters is worse than diesel trucks, making a real environmental difference when removed form our cities.
