MINIMAL MOVIES
Minimal Movies are a special kind of art movies meant for display in offices, businesses and public spaces where static art just doesn't do the job. A Minimal Movie is a form of cinema art, often seen as a slight movement in photographs and animated abstracts. Cinemagraphs are of a similar genre, but they are quite short loops based on still photography and often used for display commercials and advertisement.
Minimal Movies are high resolution time based art of considerable length, containing conceptual elements and are made by renowned artists. You hang Minimal Movies on your wall as a pieces of art. They provide a subtle extra to an image, telling a story, provide a small surprise, suggest, trigger and inspire. Actually Tropism at its best. You should be able to walk by a Minimal Movie and have the feeling of having missed an event at the periphery of your perception. It should have the intrinsic quality of a superb photograph or a stunning painting and this quality should be of a lasting nature. But on top of that something is changing, moving or evolving. It is alive.
A Minimal Movie is explicitly no video art. Video art is demanding and pretentious, often too long and lack of technical quality. There are of course exeptions and there is very good video art around, but the bulk is boring. Minimal Movies are made by artists with experience in filmmaking or do have a cinematographic quality of visualisation. Although nowadays the technical difference between film and video are not that obvious anymore, the differences between video makers and cineasts in mentality and disciplines remain.
The format of Minimal Movies are set out in a range of simple rules:
1) tripod - preferably no camera moves or only subtile ones
2) sound - optional, only set noise or modest soundscapes, no explicit music as this will irritate after a short while. The level of the audio should be such no one is bothered by the continues soundtrack.
3) loop - often a Minimal Movie is a single take of considerable length and made into a seamless loop
4) screen - a Minimal Movie should preferably be shown on a big flat and thin 4K screen.
Minimal Movies can be figurative or abstract, captured optically, computer generated or composited. They are available as exclusive art or as limited editions and can be rented or bought. They can also be made in assignment, taking in account a specific subject or corporate identity. Both my company Morphosis and the Tropism Art & Science Foundation provides media made to measure.
The production of Minimal Movies is an ongoing process. We are setting up a library for Kunst.nl (Business Art Service) of Minimal Movies to be rented out. Enquiries here.
